What is Breast Implant Removal Surgery?

Occasionally, both silicone and saline breast implants may require removal (implant explantation). The implant can be replaced with a similar one, or you may wish to make some changes, such as choosing a new size, shape, or type of breast implant. You may also opt not to have a replacement at all.

If no replacement is chosen, or if there has been notable weight loss since the previous implant surgery, you may prefer to have a breast lift surgery. This can happen simultaneously as the implant removal and can greatly enhance the effect of the final outcome.

In some cases, the implant needs to be removed due to complications such as capsular contracture, asymmetry, or implant rupture. Whatever your requirements, our Jacksonville-based plastic surgery team will be more than capable of fulfilling them.

In breast augmentation surgery, the body forms a thin layer of scar tissue around the implant, called a capsule. Capsular contracture (often mistakenly referred to as encapsulation), is when the scar tissue becomes thick, causing hardening or distortion of the breast implant, resulting in a change in its natural appearance. Infrequently, there may be some tenderness or pain.

The formation of a scar tissue capsule around a foreign object in the body is a perfectly normal immune system response and is nothing to worry about unless symptoms cause discomfort or distortion. In such cases, it is best to remove the implant and surrounding scar tissue to alleviate the discomfort. This type of breast implant revision is known as a capsulectomy.

En bloc capsulectomy is simply when the implant and scar tissue are removed altogether as one piece. This is typically required if the implant has ruptured, the capsule has developed calcifications, or patients want to ensure that the implant and capsule have been removed in their entirety. Be sure to speak with our surgeon if this concerns you.

Breast Implant Removal Procedure – What Does It Involve?

The breast implant removal procedure itself can be simple and quick or may take more time if an en bloc capsulectomy is recommended.

In most cases, the implant can be removed using the same route it was inserted. The incision is made along the existing scar to limit any unnecessary added tissue damage to the skin.

If a silicone breast implant was used, it can be deflated before removal and a much smaller incision made. In the case of ruptured silicone breast implant removal or en bloc capsulectomy, a larger incision is required. Either way, the incision will usually be in the same location as the existing scar and little to no new scarring will be added.

At this time, the patient may desire to include breast lift surgery to remove any sagging skin that may have occurred since the augmentation procedure. A breast lift can also offset any stretch in the skin that occurs to accommodate the new implant. If no replacement implant is being added, then some degree of breast lift may be advised.

Breast Implant Removal Recovery

A cropped shot of a woman holding a breast implantRecovery from breast implant removal surgery is typically easier than the original breast augmentation surgery. You can expect bruising, swelling, and some pain at the site, and we recommend refraining from strenuous activity for 6 weeks. You will get all the information you need regarding recovery in your care package.

Breast Implant Removal Cost

Breast implant removal cost is dependent upon a number of factors. It can vary depending on saline or silicone implants, en bloc or simple removal procedure, removal only or replacement with new implants, and inclusion of breast lift surgery during the removal. All these factors will influence the cost of your breast implant removal. Speak with your surgeon to get a full picture of what your treatment plan entails and the associated cost.

FAQs

What Are the Most Common Reasons for Breast Implant Removal?

Some common reasons women choose breast implant removal include:

  • Complications (capsular contracture, implant rupture, infection, etc.)
  • Lack of comfort with implant size
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Changes in aesthetic preferences
  • A desire for a more natural appearance

Some patients also opt for implant removal to address changes in their bodies over time, such as sagging or alterations in breast shape.

Will Breast Implant Removal Affect My Nipple Sensitivity?

Breast implant removal may affect nipple sensitivity. However, this varies from patient to patient.

Some individuals experience temporary changes in sensation. Others may notice a permanent alteration.

The degree of sensitivity change depends on factors like:

  • The surgical technique
  • The size of the implant,
  • The individual patient’s unique anatomy

In many cases, sensation returns to normal after the body has fully healed. Still, it is important to discuss this potential outcome with Dr. Kirk during the consultation. She will help you understand the risks based on your specific situation.

How Do I Know if I Need a Breast Lift After Implant Removal?

You may need a breast lift after implant removal if your skin has stretched or your breasts have begun to sag. This is more likely if you had large implants.

The need for a lift is often determined, in part, by how much skin has lost elasticity. Dr. Kirk will also consider whether the breasts can maintain a youthful shape without implants.

How Long Should I Wait To Remove Implants After a Rupture?

If your breast implant has ruptured, it’s recommended to have it removed or replaced as soon as possible to avoid potential complications.

A silent rupture (with no symptoms) may not cause immediate harm. However, delaying the procedure could lead to issues like inflammation or changes in breast shape.

The specific timing for removal will depend on your symptoms and Dr. Kirk’s advice. Prompt action is generally advised to minimize risks.
